Start with your situation, not just registration
Moving to the Netherlands and launching a business brings several decisions together. Your activity, customers, country of residence and plans for hiring or working with partners all matter. Write down what you intend to sell, where the work takes place and whether customers are businesses or consumers.
If you are moving from abroad, check the residence and work conditions that apply to you before starting. A company registration is not a substitute for permission to live or work in the Netherlands. The official government checklist is a useful place to begin.
Choose a structure and prepare the numbers
Common options include a sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak), general partnership (VOF) and private limited company (BV). The choice affects liability, administration and taxes. A BV requires a civil-law notary. It should be assessed using your circumstances rather than a universal profit threshold.
Prepare a short financial outline: launch costs, expected sales, regular costs and the amount you need for living expenses. Consider when customers will actually pay. A profitable forecast can still leave you short of cash in the first months.
Before sending your first invoice
- Confirm the registration route and any activity-specific permits.
- Check the VAT treatment of your actual transactions.
- Set up a way to collect invoices and reconcile payments.
- Agree who monitors official correspondence and filing dates.
- Separate business transactions clearly from private spending.
A question worth asking early
A consultant expects to work for Dutch clients and clients abroad. Instead of reusing the same invoice settings for every customer, the consultant should have the customer location and transaction reviewed before issuing invoices.
